SGU Tiwahe Glu Kini Pi Wicincila Sunkawakan Camp: Strength, Culture, and Growth for Young Girls

By: Yamni White Hat

A three-day cultural immersion camp held last week provided a group of young girls with an opportunity to connect with Lakota traditions, build self-confidence, and develop a deep bond with the Sunkawakan Oyate (the Horse Nation).

This last week I helped assist with the Wicincila, Younger Girls, Sunkawakan Camp. This three-day experience for girls ages 8 to 11 blended cultural teachings, hands-on learning, and outdoor activities. The purpose of the camp was to give the girls a space to learn about their identity, build confidence, and connect with Lakota ways of life in a meaningful and engaging way.

The camp days were thoughtfully structured by Jaylynn and Quincy to balance both learning and fun. Each morning started with a prayer and smudging, helping everyone begin the day in a good way. From there, the girls rotated through different stations in smaller groups, which kept them active and involved throughout the day.

Again, a major part of the camp is centered around horsemanship. The girls were introduced to horse safety, learning how to approach and respect the horse, practiced grooming, and of course the chance to ride. For some of them, this was a new experience, and it was rewarding to see them grow more comfortable and confident as they spent time with the horses. These lessons also helped reinforce respect for the Sunkawakan Oyate, the Horse Nation, and the role horses hold in Lakota culture.

Cultural expression was another key part of the camp. The girls participated in activities like fancy shawl dancing and footwork led by Gabi Kenny and Liv Two Lance, where they learned not only the movements and rhythms but also the meaning behind them. Justin Baker and Chaz White Feather assisted with the drum; both are well known for their singing and knowledge of our songs. These experiences gave them a chance to connect with tradition in a way that was both educational and empowering.

The camp also included creative and educational opportunities beyond the arena. The girls worked on art projects, visited the SGU greenhouse and museum, and swam in Valentine. They also spent time enjoying the outdoors, which helped create a fun and relaxed environment where they could build friendships.

The final day brought everyone together for a family cookout, where the girls were able to showcase what they had learned. Ron Fredrick taught the girls an introduction into archery safety as well on the final day. Their artwork was displayed, and certificates were handed out to recognize their participation. It was a great way to celebrate their efforts and growth over the three days.

As a helper, I supported the activities, guided the girls when needed, and helped keep things organized. Being part of this camp showed me how valuable these kinds of experiences are. It’s not just about activities, it’s about creating a space where young girls feel strong, capable, and connected to who they are.

Overall, the Wicincila Sunkawakan Camp was a powerful and positive experience. It gave the girls an opportunity to learn, try new things, and deepen their cultural understanding while building confidence that will carry with them moving forward.
