Institute of Technologies WoLakota Statement:

The IOT programs/Department offer degrees and courses that are mainly hands-on and work-based learning. “Learning by doing” is a fundamental component not only in the academic offerings, but also in our traditional teachings of WoLakota: wisdom-teaching, compassion, understanding, guiding others, and respect for others. This ties directly to the SGU’s overall mission statement of building a healthy, resilient tribal nation, self-determination, life-long learning, and visionary leadership.

Program Description:

The Institute of Technologies (IOT) provides career and technical education courses incorporating classroom and work-based career and technical instruction, leading to Associate of Applied Science Degrees in areas including Construction Trades Technologies, Office Technology, Computer Technology, Data Entry, and Marketing. The Institute of Technologies department provides one-year (OY) and short-term (ST) certificate programs to support our advanced degree programs. Successful completion of a short-term and one-year certificate program is the starting point for many students in achieving more advanced degrees. The curricula in the certificate programs provide for a “stackable” articulation into one of the IOT Associate of Applied Science degree programs. These include short-term certificates in: Customer Service, Data Entry, Maintenance Technician, Help Desk Support, and Additive Manufacturing Technician, and one-year certificates in Building Trades, Office Technology, Data Entry Technician, Desktop Support Technician, Marketing, and Welding.

Program History

The Institute of Technologies began as a Vocational Education Program in the fall of 1986 with two programs: Building Trades and Forestry Technology. The Secretarial and Data Processing programs were added in 1989.

An Accounting Certificate was added in 2001. Along with all the changes in technology, the Secretarial program became Office Technology, which is still an existing program presently.

The IOT department continues to evolve in program design and has implemented more degree offerings since 2001. Data Processing began after 2001, and since then has evolved into the Data Entry program, which includes the development of the short-term certificate in data entry, a one-year data entry technician, and an AAS Data Entry Specialist. The data entry certificate and degrees are considered “stackable” degree pathways.

The NASA grant was the driving force behind the creation of the Additive Manufacturing program, which opened its doors to students in the Fall of 2024. Marking it as the first-ever installation of a robotic arm for concrete-pouring projects.

The one-year Welding certificate program, the first SGU Welding program in history at SGU, opened its doors to student admissions in the Spring of 2024. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in November of 2024 on the SGU Lake Campus. The new SGU welding building began receiving students in the Fall of 2025.
