Dean Of Students

The Dean of Students at Sinte Gleska University serves as the primary advocate for the student body and a critical link between students and the university administration. This role is centered on fostering a supportive campus environment that aligns with the university’s mission of Lakota self-determination.

The Dean of Students is the administrative lead for Student Services, acting as a direct liaison between the Student Association and the University Administration. The role is designed to monitor all student policies and campus regulations while assisting student groups in decision-making and problem-solving. At SGU, this position often overlaps with enrollment and retention efforts, ensuring students are supported from recruitment through graduation.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

Student Advocacy & Liaison

  • Primary Contact: Serves as the first point of contact for students navigating university bureaucracy or seeking to address institutional concerns.

     

  • Student Association Support: Acts as a formal liaison to the Student Association, providing administrative guidance for student-led initiatives.

     

  • Conflict Resolution: Assists student groups in developing recommendations, making decisions, and solving problems effectively.

     

Policy & Disciplinary Oversight

  • Regulation Monitoring: Continuously monitors and enforces student policies and campus regulations to maintain a fair and safe environment.

     

  • Disciplinary Management: Collaborates with department chairs and the Director for Student Services to handle disciplinary actions and resolve student behavior issues.

 

  • Student Rights: Ensures that all institutional policies and department processes are communicated clearly and followed fairly by the student body.

 

Campus Life & Activities

  • Organization Supervision: Oversees the coordination and advisement of student organizations and extracurricular activities not directly related to academic instruction.

     

  • Event Planning: Leads proactive student life programming, including community meetings, assemblies, and student leadership training.

     

  • Environment Management: Works to foster a school climate that enhances both community bonding and individual student growth.​

Library Study Session

​Academic & Administrative Collaboration

  • Course Scheduling: Collaborates with the Vice President of Academic Affairs (VPAA), faculty, and the Registrar to prepare and finalize course schedules.

 

  • Recruitment & Counseling: In the current SGU structure, the Dean of Students often performs double duty as an Academic Counselor, assisting with student recruitment, matriculation, and first-year success.

     

  • Reporting: Responsible for assessing student body needs and preparing annual statistical reports for university leadership.

     

Student Support Services

  • Advising Programs: Ensures a strong faculty-student advising program is in place and functioning effectively.

     

  • Resource Coordination: Provides support to students regarding financial aid, housing, and other essential services.

     

  • Crisis Support: Serves as a point of contact for students facing significant personal or academic challenges, coordinating with counselors and specialists.
