Antelope Lake, S.D. ---- Sinte Gleska University is canceling student participation at the upcoming American Indian Higher Education Consortium Student Conference in Albuquerque, N.M. as a health pre-caution related to the spread of the CORONAVirus.
“The University is concerned about the impact of our students participating in this annual Tribal college event,” said SGU President Dr. Lionel R. Bordeaux. “The primary concern is the possibility of virus exposure by our students to the most vulnerable of the Sicangu Oyate, our elders, and the rest of the Sicangu Nation Oyate.” The annual conference is scheduled March 21-24, 2020. It has been typically attended by over 1,000 students representing 38 Tribal colleges and universities. “We know our students may be disappointed by this action,” remarked SGU President Bordeaux. “At the same time, we hope our students will share our concern about the potential risk to their elders and others.” Oglala Lakota College is taking similar action, and other institutions are assessing health pre-caution options.
