MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Why Give to SGU? TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
  • Non-profit higher education institution serving the impoverished communities on and off the reservation.
  • Many of our students are first-generation students.
  • The University provides access to higher education to those otherwise would be able to attend college.
  • Empowerment of indigenous peoples and spreading knowledge about culture to non-tribal members of the community.
  • Promote the preservation of language and culture to future generations.
  • Regardless of size, the University has produced notable members of society with many who continued to attain advanced degrees.
  • The majority of students learn, work, and live in the community; this directly transfers SGU'S efforts to the well-being of economic, leadership, and education in the communities.
Those familiar with tribal colleges often refer to them as "underfunded miracles." Despite the fact that colleges like SGU receive far less funding than other institutions of higher education (only about $8200 per student, less than what was originally authorized back in 1978!), they have grown & thrived, overcoming long odds to impact the lives of their students.

The work of Sinte Gleska University is built around Lakota virtues, culture, and tradition. It is easy to see how an emphasis on adherence to traditional Lakota values, along with a strong academic foundation, provides what is needed for  students to break the chain of poverty & hopelessness that has too long plagued the Rosebud Reservation.

Sinte Gleska University has full accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission. Enrollment has grown as have our graduating classes.
Students from families who had never considered college an option are now building on their SGU experience and excelling in bachelors degree programs including Art, Biology, and Nursing, among others. What makes this so important is not only the impact that SGU has on the current group of students but also the fact that this generation of success is changing expectations in the Rosebud area. SGU graduates EXPECT their children to go to college, where before it was a rarity.

Though it has enjoyed remarkable success in its young history, Sinte Gleska University faces significant financial hurdles to its continued growth.  The Rosebud Sioux Tribe Higher Ed Program and organizations like the American Indian College fund give generously to scholarship programs, but with the vast majority of SGU students coming from families with income below the federal poverty threshold, there is still a great unmet need.

We hope that you will join us in our vision for Sinte Gleska University, and in support of student success here.
