We do not have a Lakota word for “Hello” or even “Good Morning” these greetings do not exist in Lakota.
A simple “Hau” for males is sufficient
“Han” followed by a relative term is sufficient for females.

pidamiyaye for these lessons and teachings. I am so grateful for this site. this means more than i can say...i can pronounce most but it would be extra awesome if we could actually hear the word too so we dont say it wrong.

relatives,

male (directional sole) and female (omnidirectional soul) are two sides of the same coin, yet operate differently.

male: hau is pronounced how (au dipthong) and your mouth creates a circle (puckered a bit). (the center of the world is indwelling, we are greeted).

female: han is just as it looks it sounds, han. however the final sound (n) the mouth sounds a bit like like nyah and almost falls silent. (sparks of star light illuminate, similar to the shooting star)

relationship is essential to Lakota language and clan. greetings include family ties or bonds like aunt or uncle distinguishing _on my fathers side or _ on my mothers side. this helps to show respect and acknowledges relationship and family member.

Hau is thought to be a borrowing from an Algonquin tribe, as the AU of Hau is the only dipthong of that type in the Lakota language.
Hau translates as: Hello, Yes, Ok, and Amen.
