  Mission Statement & Learning Outcomes (Spring 2015)  

MISSION STATEMENT

 

The Human Services Department at Sinte Gleska University is committed to fully support the overall SGU Mission Statement.  Therefore, the Human Services Department will provide students and graduates a rigorous academic experience reflective of contemporary education and Sicangu Lakota knowledge and values. Bachelor of Art (BA) graduates will be competent and skilled professional helpers. Graduates will be fully prepared to serve in helping positions or go on to successfully complete graduate studies. BA graduates will also have an appreciation of the Lakota way of life, weaving the Wolakota philosophy into both professional and personal domains, Graduates will also be active critical thinkers and self-starters who are  productive and contributing citizens. Lastly, BA graduates will be personally committed to healthy, responsible lifestyles.

  LEARNING OUTCOMES   I. APPRECIATE AND INTEGRATE THE LAKOTA WAY OF LIFE (WOLAKOTA) BY SYNTHSIZING THIS PERSPECTIVE INTO BOTH PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL DOMAINS: 
  • Lakota culture, history, language
  • proper and respectful relationships
  • tiwahe, tiospaye and community dynamics
  • health and wellness
  • leadership and government
 

II. BE AN ACTIVE CRITICAL THINKER AND SELF STARTER; BE A PRODUCTIVE AND CONTRIBUTING CITIZEN (CHANGE AGENT) WHO DEMONSTRATES:

  • intellectual curiosity
  • critical thinking and problem solving
  • assertive and proactive behavior
  • self-reflection and life-time learning
  • advocacy, activism, volunteerism, empowerment
  • knowledge about and involvement in community and government affairs
  III. BE A COMPETENT & SKILLED HUMAN SERVICES HELPER WHO DEMONSTRATES: 
  • integration of Wolakota into professional life
  • appropriate assessment and helping skills
  • knowledge about helping systems, organizations, and making proper referrals
  • a professional demeanor; application of proper ethics and legal knowledge
  • proficiency with records/case management and computer and related technology skills
  • engagement in reflection, continued learning and growth
  • effective communication skills: oral, written, technology, and interpersonal
  • preparation for graduate level work
  • preparation and eligibility for credentialing (registration, certificate, licensure) if appropriate
  IV. DEMONSTRTE A HEALTHY, RESPONSIBLE LIFESTYLE BY APPLYING:
  • Wolakota into personal life.
  • healthy and positive management of personal challenges and issues
  • actions as positive role model
  • a balanced perspective between one's professional and personal life

Sinte Gleska University has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC – formerly the North Central Association) since 1983. Because SGU is accredited, colleges and universities across the United States will review courses that students take at SGU and will consider them for transfer.
