Message From the VP/Academic Chair:
Cheryl Medearis

The late Christa McAuliffe stated, “I Touch the future. I teach.” A career in education at Sinte Gleska University is a wonderful investment in your future and the futures of children and youth. If you are interested in becoming an elementary, secondary or special education teacher, we have high quality programs that will assist you in becoming a certified teacher.
Bachelor of Science programs include: K-8 Elementary Education with concentrated areas of study in Early Childhood, Lakota Studies, or Middle School; a dual major in K-8 Elementary Education/K-12 Special Education; and a secondary degree with a major in history and a concentrated area of study in Lakota Studies. Associate of Arts degrees include: Elementary Education, Special Education, and Early Childhood. We also offer two Associate of Arts degrees in Paraprofessional Studies: one with an emphasis in Elementary Education; the other in middle/secondary education. Courses to obtain Elementary or Secondary Alternative Certification are also available.
The Masters in Education (M.Ed.) offers programs to become certified as a K-12 Reading Specialist; the Educational Administration program is approved to certify elementary and secondary principals; other options include Early Childhood Special Education and Curriculum and Instruction tracks.
As Department Chair of the Education Department, I would like to welcome you to our education department website and to thank you for taking time to explore the opportunities we provide in teacher education. As we move toward future development, we must remember those who have contributed so much to the education of the Sicangu Lakota Oyate. Therefore, these education pages are dedicated to the memories and contributions of Ollie Napesni (1917-2008); Neola Spotted Tail (1938-2008) and Fred Leader Charge ( 1933-2004), whose influences will impact many future generations.
