OUR NEWEST RELEASE SPRING 2023

The songs and dances of the Lakota and the objects and dress utilized in their performance are considered by many to be the one of the most viable of traditional culture traits among the contemporary Lakota. While it must be realized that singing and dancing continue to play an important role in Lakota society, we must also remember that the seeming predominance is due in large part to the greater visibility of singing and dancing in more or less traditional tribal dancing clothes.
“Yet, in spite of this greater visibility, there are many—and this holds even more true for the young—who do not understand all that is going on at contemporary “wacipis” or celebrations. When it comes to questions of evolution or of the traditional ways of the song or dance, the number of Lakota who can perform or know of the earlier manner of doing things— “ehanni wico'ecun”—is smaller still. Thus it is vital for a text of this kind to make available introductory material on traditional and contemporary secular ways of singing and dancing, especially since the natural or traditional ways of acquiring such knowledge often do not reach the majority of the people.”

Lakota Star Knowledge: Studies in Lakota Stellar Theology

Throughout the Americas, Native North American groups throughout the hemisphere have been avid watchers of the sky and have carefully noted the cyclic patterns of the Sun and Moon, the stars, and planets. In earlier years, they had to heed the teachings of celestial events in order to survive. One of the primary impediments to interpreting sky-related traditions is today’s general lack of observational experience. Even many professional astronomers have little experience with naked eye observations. Yet naked eye observation allows one to construct a highly accurate calendar using the ordered patterns and motions of the celestial bodies. Native American groups also watched the motions of the planets, as well as other appearances including comets, meteor showers, and lunar and solar eclipses, in order to guide their lives. This book is concerned with regular celestial events that provided sacred order to the Lakota. The following pages summarize the primary stellar and solar features a naked eye observer would be able to follow and relate these observations to observational practices of Native North Americans. Ronald Goodman(Author) spent years on the Rosebud/Sicangu Lakota reservation compiling stories from elders and medicine men. Alan Seeger (Editor)Alan Seeger began writing stories at the age of ten or so, filling spiral notebooks which have since, fortunately, been eaten by a black hole in space. He is the proprietor of Five59 Publishing, which, in addition to publishing his own work, puts out three or more short story anthologies each year, including the annual horror collection 13 BITES. He writes about things otherworldly; sometimes interplanetary or interdimensional, and other times twisted and terrifying. He is an advocate for Native American rights, writing the Facebook blog Honor The Treaties as well as the music blog Raised on Rock. He holds a Bachelor's degree in English Literature from Sinte Gleska University in South Dakota. Our good friend and SGU Alumni Alan passed away in early 2018. He is missed yet his skills and talent are infused in this book and in our lives. "Lakota Star Knowledge is a valuable source for continuing the traditional ways of the Lakota People. While the written form of learning is a pale comparison to traditional oral teaching, Lakota Star Knowledge is an excellent source of knowledge. Lakota Star Knowledge is a detailed text which relates the link between the movements of the ancestors through the Black Hills and the path of the stars in the sky as seen from Paha Sapa. Once again I would recommend this fine source of knowledge for the serious student of tradition."
