Patricia Catches the Enemy and Valaria Red Cloud, both Lakota elders from the Pine Ridge Reservation, and Dr. Mary Isaacson, Assistant Professor at South Dakota State University, shared their experiences in how they formed a collaborative partnership with SDSU's College of Nursing to provide care, a healthy lunch program, and other essentials to the elders of the Pine Ridge Reservation under the newly developed Wakanki Ewastepikte program.
Wakanki Ewastepikte, meaning "Care for our Elders", is a Lakota-led project designed to provide education to the Native American population, specific to beginning discussions about healthcare decisions for elders as they age. It is funded by the Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan.
During this informational meeting, palliative and hospice care were both discussed and defined, as well as explaining advanced directives, advanced care planning, and sharing of lessons learned during the development of the Wakanki Ewastepikte program.
The public, as well as all of RST's Health and Elder programs, were invited. The informational meetings are held quarterly. For more information, contact Denise One Star at (605) 856-8256.
