Hau, Kola! (Welcome, Friends!)
SGU’s Human Services Department hosted a group of SDSU students and faculty April 13-14, 2015. The purpose of this visit was to acquaint our SDSU guests to our Tribal College students and learning environment.
The SDSU group consisted of ten M.A. level students who are studying student services, plus their professor, Ruth Harper. Ruth has been a friend of SGU’s Human Services Dept. for close to two decades. She assisted our own M.A. level program development and continues to visit with us on counseling curriculum and graduate education.
The SDSU bunch enjoyed a number of events while on campus. Dwayne Stenstrom Sr., joined by Danielle Spotted War Bonnet, presented on the topics of student needs and assistance programs. Human Services seniors Chelsea Wilson and Steve Scares Hawk informed the group about healing herbs, smudging, and proper prayer using the spirit plate. Chelsea and Steve shared sage and bitterroot tea along with sage bundles for all guests. Kevin “Hoch” DeCora, Human Services Dept. faculty member, led the group in tipi erection combined with a team building exercise. Midas Gunhammer presented information on student financial aid and registration matters. Other Human Services faculty members - Sheryl Klein, Julia Cahill, and Mary Ann Coupland – shared information on our SGU Human Services BA and MA degree programs along with other relevant topics.
The SDSU group, as a way to show their “wopila” (thanks), hosted a feed Monday evening for Human Services Dept. faculty and students. A second “wopila” involved trash pick-up Tuesday morning by Antelope Lake, close to SGU’s campus. Hoch DeCora facilitated that project; a pick up load of 20+ trash bags were gathered by the SDSU group.
All participants agreed this was a meaningful event that allowed us to showcase many positive elements of our Tribal College academic experience.
