Recruits Lakota students from the four Tribal Section 121 Programs throughout South Dakota, and from the local Lakota students who have earned a minimum of an Associate’s Degree in Human Services areas. Eight (8) students will be recruited each year, of which five (5) students will be offered scholarship assistance. These scholarships will pay for tuition and fees as well as provide a stipend.
The students receiving the scholarships and successfully completing this degree
program, will be employed in Tribal, State, or Federal Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling programs.
Students receiving this scholarship aid will have a pay back requirement should they decide to leave the program or find employment in a field other than rehabilitation services.
TOTAL BA LEVEL CORE CREDITS: 48
To provide a rigorous academic experience reflective of contemporary education with Sicangu Lakota knowledge and values. Graduates will by prepared to serve in the Vocational Rehabilitation programs and helping professions that services individuals with disabilities, with special emphasis on individuals who reside in rural and reservation settings. Graduates will have an appreciation of the Lakota way of life, will be critical thinkers and self-starters, will be productive and contributing citizens, and will be committed to a responsible and healthy
Students applying to the Program must meet these criteria:
- 2.5 grade point average overall
- 2.6 grade point average in his/her major
- Two letters of reference, one from an immediate supervisor or field service site supervisor.
- A Personal Portfolio that provides an illustration of personal growth and achievements while preparing to become a Human Services professional.
- Participate in a personal interview with the Human Services faculty and at least one member of the Advisory Council.
- Commit to being a full-time student, taking a minimum of 12 credit hours semester.
- Commit to working a minimum of two (2) years in a Tribal, State or Federal Vocational Rehabilitation program for each year scholarship assistance is received, or agree to repay all financial assistance provided by the Program if service years are not fulfilled.
Consists of 6 members representing the Section 121 programs, the University faculty and administration, a student in the VRC program, a community or tribal program that serves Native Americans with disabilities and the State Vocational Rehabilitation Services.
