How do I become a tribal member? You must be able to prove you are a direct descendent of a tribal member and your blood degree must be at least 1/4 Sicangu Lakota. If you meet these qualifications you should contact the Tribal Enrollment Office at: Rosebud Sioux Tribe, Atten: Enrollment, PO Box 430, Rosebud, SD 57570 or telephone (605)747-2381. What genealogy resources are available at the Center? Rosebud Indian Agency Records, 1875-1931. (microfilm collection) Rosebud Indian Census, 1887-1934. Episcopal Church Records,1875-1923. Includes Baptisms, Confirmations, Marriages, and Burials performed at the various chapels across the Rosebud Reservation. Is all your information on the computer and available with the click of a button? No, we do not have indexed information from our collections in a computer database that we can retrieve with the click of a button. Top of Page How much time will it take to find information at the Center? It depends on the type of information you want. We have finding aids for some of the collections, but not all of them. You might find what you are looking for in a matter of minutes, it may take several hours, or, it may take several days. Should we call ahead before visiting the Center? You do not need to call ahead in order to visit the Center. However, if you are planning to do research we can have some items ready for you when you arrive if you call ahead. The Center is open year-round (except holidays): Monday - Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm. Off-hours are available by appointment. How big is the Rosebud reservation? We are the Sicangu Lakota people located in south central South Dakota just north of the Nebraska state line. The Rosebud reservation encompasses parts of Gregory, Todd, Mellette, Lyman and Tripp counties and totals about 5,961 square miles. How many tribal members are there? At last count there were approximately 24,426 enrolled tribal members. An estimated 20,762 tribal members live on the reservation. Top of Page |
