About the Sicangu Heritage Center
How to Find Us
Mission Statement
The mission of the Sicangu Heritage Center is to collect and preserve for current and future
generations the papers, objects and sites which document the history and culture of the Sicangu
(Brule) people and to use these materials to educate tribal members and interested others about our
heritage.
Programs
The Lakota Archives and Historical Research Center (LAHRC)
The LAHRC was created in 1984 to collect, preserve, and make available to researchers, original
materials which document our past. The archives houses papers, maps, oral histories, photographs,
and newspapers. We have a small research library of books about Native Americans. By resolution of
the Rosebud Sioux Tribal Council, we are the official archival repository for the historical records
of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe. By resolution of the Sinte Gleska University Board, we are the official
records repository for the archival records of Sinte Gleska University. We encourage local people to
bring in family photographs and documents, student papers and records of student organization
activities. These and other items are important to help the coming generations recall our lives and our
history as we lived it. Researchers and donors have access to archives material through the
reference services provided by the archives staff.
Museum
The museum collects, preserves, and interprets the objects which tell the history of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe and its members;
from earliest times until the present day. We seek to preserve historical, cultural or aesthetic
objects that are made or used by members of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe or that are associated with a
person, place or event on the Rosebud Sioux Reseration.
Historic Preservation Office
The Historic Preservation Office seeks to document and encourage preservation of the sites and
traditional cultural properties of significance to our tribe. We conduct archaeological surveys
and maintain a GIS database of recorded sites relating to the Sicangu people. We seek to preserve
information on specific places identified as having cultural or historical importance.
