Title of State Credential: GED® High School Equivalency Certificate
Minimum Test Scores: The total cumulative standard test scores for all five test items must total 2250 with no standard test score below 410. South Dakota’s passing 2250 score meets the national score requirement of the General Educational Development Testing Service.
Age Requirements: GED candidates must be at least 18 years of age.
Under 18 Testing: Individuals under the age of 18 must be enrolled in a high school GED preparation program. Applicants 17 or 16 years of age must have officially dropped out of school prior to testing and present written verification of drop date from a local school district, written permission from a parent or legal guardian and a school official and one of the following:
1. A GED preparation program official who certifies that the applicant has demonstrated the ability to successfully complete the GED test by scoring 500 on the Official GED Practice Test; or
2. A court order requiring the applicant to take the GED test.
Additional Requirements:
• Individual has not graduated from a state accredited high school or received the GED credential or other high school equivalency certificate.
• Individual must present positive picture identification and proof of age to the Official GED Testing Center. Examples include driver’s license, passport, military, school, or government identification card. All photo identification must be up-to-date (not expired) and contain the individual’s name, address, date of birth, signature, and photo.
Requirements for Re-testing: Applicants may test up to three (3) times during one calendar year (January 1-December 31); once on each form available from the GED Testing Service.
• Applicants not meeting the minimum score requirements for individual test items or the cumulative total score requirement may retest on an alternate form of the GED test.
GED Test Registration & Signup: All GED candidates are required to register before signing up for a testing session. No one will be allowed to register and take the tests on the same day. During registration, you will:
• fill out all necessary registration forms
• complete the Demographics Booklet (necessary for first-time test-takers)
• fill out Name/Address/ID Change forms (if necessary due to changes in candidate information)
• fill out the GED Test Answer Sheets
• be informed of GED testing policies and provided with a copy of test-day instructions
After completing the registration process, you may then sign up for a scheduled GED testing session. No one will be permitted to take the GED tests without registering and signing up for a testing session.
Test Schedule: GED testing sessions are regularly scheduled in Mission at the ABE/GED department office on a monthly-basis. GED testing is also available by appointment at the Gregory Learning Center. Please contact any of our offices for an up-to-date testing schedule.
GED Test Accommodations for Candidates with Disabilities: Accommodations for individuals with documented disabilities may be available upon request and approval from the GED Testing service. GED test accommodations allow test-takers with documented disabilities access to the test.
