Harold Schmelzer, MS
Mathematics & Science Instructor
Harold graduated from high school in 1963, then received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from State College of Iowa (later known as UNI). In 1966, he completed his major in Science with an emphasis in Physics and graduated with a Masters degree of Science Teaching in 1970. He holds a permanent professional certificate from the state of Iowa. He taught for three years at St. Ansgar Iowa, eight years at Traer Iowa, 11 years in Olin Iowa, one year at Malvern Iowa and 10 years at Todd County High School, South Dakota, before joining the faculty at Sinte Gleska University.

Stephanie Bordeaux-Seeger, BA
English Instructor
Stephanie Seeger (aka Sammie Bordeaux) is the English instructor in the SGU Student Support Services Department. Sammie is a 2001 graduate of Sinte Gleska University, where she has worked for the past twenty-one years, first in the library, then as Publications Coordinator, and now as an instructor. Sammie is a published author and poet and has worked in the freelance journalism field for many years. Sammie’s abiding goal in life is to help grow more Sicangu writers through her work at Sinte Gleska University.

MISSION The mission of the Foundational Studies program at Sinte Gleska University is to increase the retention and graduation rates for eligible students; to foster an institutional climate supportive of the success of all new students at SGU.
FOUNDATIONAL STUDIES STAFF The department staff consists of a Director, Mathematics Instructor, Science Instructor, and Counselor. Part time tutors are also utilized throughout the academic year as needed.
CURRICULA Student Support Services conducts numerous programs of instruction, including basic courses in Math, Science, Reading, and English. The department also provides a college preparation and orientation course.
SCOPE and SERVICES The Foundational Studies Department proudly offers the following services:
The Foundational Studies Department is housed in the Science Center on the SGU Main Campus. The FS Department also provides a computer laboratory where one-on-one tutoring sessions are conducted. Students may utilize the lab for academic work. Tutorial services are available on a walk in or referral basis.
The Foundational Studies staff exemplifies the commitment of Sinte Gleska University in providing a superior post-secondary experience for our students. FS Staff members are often the first individuals that students encounter when they enroll at our institution. We are proud of our roles in preparing new college students to meet the demands of college life and persisting to achieve a bachelor’s degree.

- Academic tutoring to enable students to complete post-secondary courses
- Advice and Assistance in postsecondary course selection
- Information on Federal financial aid programs and resources for locating public and private scholarships.
- Financial and economic literacy education.
- Assistance in applying for admission to, and obtaining financial assistance for enrollment in graduate and professional programs.
- Referrals to the Center for Student Success
- Administration of the Stanford Task Test to matriculating students.
