A Message from the President

The very essence of Sinte Gleska University stems from its location on the Rosebud Reservation. From the beginning the founders of Sinte Gleska University sought to establish a tribal higher education institution based on the philosophy of tribal control and tribal self-determination. An important premise of this philosophy was to effect change for our tribal nation.

Lionel Bordeaux PortraitToday, in the 21st century, Sinte Gleska University remains committed to its earliest purposes: to preserve and teach Lakota culture, history and language to promote innovative and effective strategies to address the myriad of social and economic concerns confronting the Sicangu Lakota Oyate. In recent years we have witnessed a tremendous growth in terms of facilities, academic program development and projects that respond to the immediate and long-range needs of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe. Sinte Gleska University is confident that our institutional mission and vision will continue to lead our work efforts in the future.

Sinte Gleska University is currently in the process of a next stage of plans to realize additional facilities construction at the SGU Antelope Lake Campus in order to consolidate Administrative Offices in Mission, South Dakota, for the benefit of students, staff and faculty. Another key dimension in the upcoming years involves the creation of the Scott Bordeaux Leadership Institute as designed to facilitate a process for strengthening our tribal nation through both national and international initiatives. Specific goals for the Scott Bordeaux Leadership Institute include:

1) providing technical assistance to tribal communities and coalitions of indigenous peoples in areas of education, economic development, and revitalization of tribal cultures and languages;

2) developing model economic development plans;

3) developing an Indian Education Blueprint;

4) researching and disseminating best use practices relating to economic development, restoration of tribal languages, indigenous land use and environmental management practices; and

5) conducting leadership seminars for SGU students and community leaders. The Scott Bordeaux Leadership Institute represents a vital avenue to expore new program development and implementation and to involve institutional constituencies in the identification of future goals and purposes at Sinte Gleska University.

At the core of our future plans is the institutional theme, Wahope Ungluwa Sakapi Hecel Oyate Ki Wolakota Gluha Tokatakiya Unya Pi Kte (Reinforcing our Foundation for the People to Go Forward in the Lakota Way). The centerpiece of this concept is Wolakota (peace), a term conceived during the turbulent era of intertribal wars resulting from emerging tribal nations and armed contests over resources. Tribal elders discussed behavioral rules and codes and after many years of trial and error, Wolakota was finally achieved. Wolakota means to act and behave with ultimate respect, harmony, peace and friendship. Wolakota has always been an integral aspect in development of Sinte Gleska University and is clearly the path for accomplishing our future plans.

The mission and vision of Sinte Gleska University invites participation in growth and change on the Rosebud Reservation. We now invite you to join all of us at Sinte Gleska University in meeting the challenges that confront the Sicangu Lakota Oyate in the 21st Century.

—Lionel R. Bordeaux,

President, 1972-Present
