About the Shield of Sinte Gleska University
The buffalo was the primary animal the Lakota depended upon for survival.
The skull of this animal became a significant symbol. It represents the “Lakol Wicoh’an”, the traditional way of life. It also represents the “Pte Oyate”, the spiritual life.
The Lakota Medicine Wheel represents the sacred hoop and the four directions.
The Lakota believe that the eagle has a special place among the birds and animals. The four eagle feathers represent the social and spiritual significance of the number four in Lakota Life.
Within the Lakota Medicine Wheel are the four Lakota virtues:
Woksape: Wisdom
Woohitika: Bravery
Wowacintanka: Fortitude
Wacantognaka: Generosity
Today, through education, Sinte Gleska University strives to perpetuate these values.
